Walking up the hill
I stop to notice
long, shallow trenches
exposed after the snow melt
I imagine mice running
through ice tunnels
protected from wind
and predators
in their winter labyrinth
But now
their secrets are laid bare
under a shimmering
unforgiving sun
This is a Quadrills (44 words) including “shimmer” for Victoria at dVerse. And it is inspired by nature for Margaret at the Imaginary Garden with Real Toads. Thank you both for the writing prompts and the space to post. There’s day 4 done and dusted. Phew!
Oh, I love the image this creates! Well done.

This is a very cool perspective. One doesnt often think about the small underground creatures, living their full lives unseen. Loved this, Mary!

I so enjoyed experiencing this moment of incipient spring and all it exposes as snow melts. Secrets unfold.

I love to see those tunnels exposed.. It really gives me a reassurance that even under that blanket of ice and snow there are life…

That’s how I felt too. Winter is harsh, but there is more happening than we can see.

This was fun, enjoying with you surprises left from winter. What was when winter came is still there, better, worse, or unchanged. Then there is the new. Much more exciting. Where I lived in Nebraska springtime bared the mole mounds and tunnels. They too were busiy in the wintertime. I don’t have experience with mice.

Thank you Jim. This is the first year I’ve seen them. I had to ask someone what they were. We too have lots of mole tunnels here. Lots!

The small creatures do cooperate better among them than some humans. Very true Mary!

I adore poems of immediate reflection, present tense. How many would not observe, never notice. And the imagination of the mice, protected by the tunnels. Perfect nature poem 😉

Some secrets under the snow are not so pleasant. I hope the mice can build more tunnels to hid from that unforgiving sun. I do like this observation of nature’s little creatures.
