NaPoWriMo #22

Yesterday it was so warm
I went outside with
no coat, no gloves, no scarf.
I felt the sun on my face
and breathed in
moisture-laden air
with the subtle smell of spring.
I pushed my fingers
into the warm earth.
It’s been a long, long winter.

Happy Earth Day!

This Sunday morning
millions of miracles
appear outside my door.
Resurrection everywhere.

I had 29 people over for Easter dinner, so I’m playing catch up. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. I hope you had a wonderful Easter or Passover or whatever you celebrate. And if you don’t celebrate anything I hope you had a wonderful day.

The frost has left the ground
purple crocus are open
Sparrows are back
insistently calling
Old Sam, Peabody, Peabody, Peabody
to one another
Buds on maples are reddening
the first tiny leaves
on the lilac
have opened
as we tip towards the sun.
Tomorrow’s forecast is
10-12 inches of snow –
a typical April in Wisconsin

Disclaimer: I looked up the sound the sparrows make.  If left to my own devices I just hear cheep – cheepcheep – cheep.

Spring is here
officially
Unofficially, tiny snow flakes
are dancing through
gunmetal gray skies
as if to taunt us
Last fall’s
dead leaves are
exposed like dirty socks and secrets
I go to the back of the closet
to get my winter coat

Happy Spring, suckers –
April Fools!

April is the cruelest month, and also National Poetry month. So in honor of that I will post a poem each day of the month. I should probably be linked to some helpful site that encourages this and gives writing topics, but I’m just not well organized enough to have thought about that. So, let the adventure begin.

The soft
spring breeze
saunters
through the screen door
as though it knew
how we longed for it
dreamed of it
in our winter hearts
It whispers
of warm, green days
of dirt and sprouting seeds
as it carries April away

Spring is trying to reform.
She’s been such a cold bitch
even the crows are pissed off.
But just when we think she’s
going to turn over a new leaf
who should come along
but Snow White.

Actually, it wasn’t so bad in my little corner of Wisconsin today. That’s what’cha for being behind with writing.
